According to The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) , their Annual Homeless Assessment Report stated that 62,619 veterans were homeless on a single night in 2012. It has also been found that homeless women veterans are far more common now than in any other time in the past.
Triton College will be hosting an event to assist veterans in need. A Step For Vets Walk and Donation Drive will be happening on Saturday April 27, 2013. Through this free event, Triton College is hoping to raise awareness about veterans in need, who are homeless, or at risk of homelessness. Triton will be collecting gently used (or new) clothes, new personal hygiene (toothpaste, soap, deodorant, etc.) products, non-perishable food items, as well as monetary donations. You may bring these items on the day of the event. All donations will go to support Hines VA Hospital’s outreach to homeless veterans.
A Step for Vets will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and include a warm-up Zumba class at 10 a.m., with the opening ceremony and walk beginning at 10:30 a.m. around the mounds on the west side of Triton College’s main campus, 2000 Fifth Ave., in River Grove.
The event will also offer children’s activities, refreshments for sale, and live music provided by Bailiff. You can listen to Bailiff at www.bailiff.com . There will also be raffles, give-aways, and t-shirts throughout the day. In case of inclement weather, the event will take place inside the Robert M. Collins Center, which is the R Building located across 5th Ave. at our East campus.
There is no set distance to the walk, you can walk as many times around the mounds as you want, located in the middle of the main campus.
The event would appreciate as many student volunteers as they can get. Please come out and show your support for those who have served for our country, they will greatly appreciate it.
